How We Work.
ClearPath — the twelve steps every Olson Kitchen + Bath project follows, from first conversation to one year after you move back in.
Most concerns about remodeling have nothing to do with design or construction. They come from uncertainty. Unclear scope. Shifting budgets. Timelines that stretch without explanation. A contractor who goes quiet at week three and won't answer the phone at week five.
ClearPath exists to remove that uncertainty before it has a chance to start. It is the process we've refined across more than four decades of construction work in California and Washington, and every project follows it — regardless of scope or investment.
A decision made early is inexpensive. The same decision made after demolition is expensive, and by then you're making it under pressure. ClearPath front-loads the thinking, so you know exactly what you're committing to before construction ever begins.
A short call — fifteen or twenty minutes. What you're hoping to remodel, your timeline, and the investment range you're working with. It's a fit conversation, not a sales call. We aren't the right firm for every project, and this is how we both find out.

A thirty to forty-five minute online meeting — Bill and one of our designers together, before anyone drives anywhere. How you use the space today, what's working, what isn't, and what a remodel could actually accomplish. No design decisions yet. This is about getting oriented to your home and your goals.

Bill and Maureen or Sheila come to your home together — not an estimator. Plan on about ninety minutes. We walk the space, listen to how you actually live in it, and do a 3D scan of the area we'll be working in. That scan becomes the foundation for every drawing that follows: accurate measurements, no guesswork. There is nothing to prepare, and no obligation at the end of the visit.

A paid agreement covering three things — design, budget, and permitting. Everything that has to happen before construction can begin. Done properly, that work takes time and costs money to produce, and this is the agreement that funds it. We don't email it and ask you to sign. We walk you through it together, line by line, and every question is answered before anything is signed.

Drawings and revisions until the plan is right — not one drawing, a process. Alongside them, we guide your selections at CFM, Ferguson, Seattle Lighting, Visual Comfort & Co., Kohler Design Center, and Chown Hardware. Cabinetry, tile, fixtures, appliances, finishes. Every one of them is decided here, because a fixed price isn't possible until we know exactly what is going into your home.

Detailed written proposal with full scope, material specifications, and a clear payment schedule tied to construction milestones. Allowances at face value — we don't lowball selections to make the contract look cheaper.

We walk you through the finished plan together: final design and layouts, the full scope of work, your selections, one committed price, and the schedule. Plan on an hour to ninety minutes. By the end, you'll have what you need to decide.

The contract for the build itself. This is the largest commitment in the process, and it's too big a moment to handle over video. We sit down with you in your home, walk through it together, and answer every question before anything is signed.

Every cabinet, tile, fixture, appliance, and finish material ordered, delivered, and staged before we touch a wall — usually in your garage, and we'll talk through the space we need well before anything arrives. It takes a few weeks, and it is the discipline that protects your project from the most common cause of construction delay: missing materials. Your JobTread portal goes live during this period.

Work begins with everything already on site. You get a written summary every Friday afternoon and a portal you can open at midnight — what was finished this week, what's scheduled next, and any decision we need from you. You will never have to chase us for an update.

Bill walks the project with you himself, before any final balance is released. Punch list items are handled before sign-off, not after.

We come back. We adjust the cabinet doors, tighten the hardware, and set right whatever has settled or moved. Nothing will be broken, and you probably wouldn't have called us about it. We come anyway.

The Standard Behind the Process

This process exists for one reason. The standard Bill’s grandfather taught him on a Napa Valley job site more than four decades ago is a standard you can’t deliver consistently without discipline. Without staging materials. Without documenting decisions. Without proactive communication. Without a final walkthrough that doesn’t skip the parts no one will ever inspect.
“You and I will know it’s not right.”
The process is how that standard becomes something we can deliver every time — not just on the project where everything goes well.
Why This Matters
Most remodeling problems can be traced to four failures, all of which happen before construction starts:
Scope is unclear, so change orders pile up once work begins.
Selections aren’t finalized, so the project waits on materials that should have been ordered weeks earlier.
Communication isn’t structured, so the homeowner has to chase the contractor for updates.
The contractor isn’t actually doing the work — they’re managing subcontractors who report to no one.
The Olson process addresses each of those failures structurally. Scope is locked. Selections are made early. Communication is on a calendar. And Bill is personally on every project, reviewing the work at framing, pre-finish, and final.

You Work Directly With the Olson Family
From the first consultation through the final walkthrough, you work directly with the Olson family. Bill leads construction. Maureen leads design. Melanie leads the client experience. Matthew runs the digital side. There are no handoffs to a project manager you’ve never met. No salesperson who disappears once the contract is signed.
Decisions are made with full context across design, construction, and budget — because the same people are involved in all three.
Start With a Conversation
If you’re planning a kitchen, bath, or whole-home renovation in Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Mill Creek, Woodinville, Sammamish, or Bothell — we’d love to meet you.
The first step is a conversation about your home, your goals, and what a project together might look like. No pitch. No pressure. Just an honest assessment of whether we’re the right fit for what you’re building.
